Ab Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts war es nicht länger erlaubt, die Toten innerhalb der Stadtmauern zu begraben. Der alte Friedhof rund um die Kirche wurde daher in die Molenstraat verlegt. Der neue Friedhof war von 1804 bis 1950 in Betrieb, als der Parkfriedhof an der 18-Augustlaan eröffnet wurde.
Die neogotische Kapelle der Familie Pottelsberghe de la Potterie ist das einzige Überbleibsel des Friedhofs an der Molenstraat. Sie ist die letzte Ruhestätte von 8 Mitgliedern dieser wohlhabenden Familie, die ein Schloss auf Overschelde hatte. Die Gruftkapelle wurde 1870 aus Abbruchmaterial der alten mittelalterlichen Sint-Gertrudiskerk errichtet und war prominent im Friedhof platziert.
