Depuis le début du 19ème siècle, il n'était plus permis d'enterrer les morts à l'intérieur des murs de la ville. L'ancien cimetière autour de l'église a donc déménagé vers la Molenstraat. Le nouveau cimetière a été en service de 1804 à 1950, lorsque le cimetière du parc de l'avenue du 18 août a ouvert.
La chapelle néogothique de la famille Pottelsberghe de la Potterie est le seul vestige du cimetière de la Molenstraat. Elle est le dernier lieu de repos de 8 membres de cette riche famille qui possédait un château à Overschelde. La chapelle funéraire a été érigée en 1870 avec les matériaux de démolition de l'ancienne église médiévale Sainte-Gertrude et était située de manière proéminente dans le cimetière.
