Das Schloss im maasländischen Neorenaissancestil war ursprünglich ein Traum des Rentners Edgar Maris, der das Anwesen Bokrijk von der Familie Coghen kaufte. Jacobus Van Mansfeld wurde als Architekt engagiert. Maris geriet jedoch in finanzielle Schwierigkeiten und versuchte, seine Mittel aufzubessern, indem er viele Bäume auf seinem Anwesen fällte und eine Holzschreinerei gründete. Auch der Bahnhof Bokrijk war dafür von Bedeutung: Dort konnte Holz verladen werden. Auch Eisenerz, in Form von Eisenerz, wurde auf dem Anwesen abgebaut.
