El castillito en estilo neorrenacentista de Maasland era originalmente un sueño del rentista Edgar Maris, quien compró el dominio Bokrijk de la familia Coghen. Jacobus Van Mansfeld fue contratado como arquitecto. Sin embargo, Maris tuvo problemas financieros y trató de complementar sus recursos talando muchos árboles en su dominio y comenzando una pequeña fábrica de madera. La estación Bokrijk también era importante para esto: se podía cargar madera. También se extraía mineral de hierro, en forma de limonita, en el dominio.
