Il castello in stile neorinascimentale Maaslandese era originariamente un sogno del rentier Edgar Maris, che acquistò il dominio di Bokrijk dalla famiglia Coghen. Jacobus Van Mansfeld fu assunto come architetto. Tuttavia, Maris si trovò in difficoltà finanziarie e cercò di integrare le sue risorse abbattendo molti alberi sul suo dominio e iniziando una piccola fabbrica di legname. La Stazione di Bokrijk era importante anche per questo: era possibile caricare legname. Anche il minerale di ferro, sotto forma di limonite, veniva estratto nel dominio.
