The castle in Maasland neo-Renaissance style was originally a dream of the rentier Edgar Maris, who purchased the Bokrijk estate from the Coghen family. Jacobus Van Mansfeld was hired as the architect. However, Maris ran into financial troubles and attempted to supplement his resources by cutting down many trees on his estate and starting a small wood factory. The Bokrijk Station was also important for this: Wood could be loaded there. Iron ore, in the form of iron ochre, was also extracted from the estate.
