Die weiche Birke (Betula pubescens) gehört zur Familie der Birken. Die häufigste ist die raue Birke. An der Basis ist die Rinde weiß. Die Bast hat weniger Rillen als bei der rauen Birke. Die Blätter sind drei bis sechs Zentimeter lang, eiförmig bis rautenförmig, spitz und auf der Unterseite weich behaart. Das Holz ist weich und verrottet schnell. Manchmal ist das Holz einer toten Birke bereits verrottet, während die Rinde noch vorhanden ist.
Der Saft der Birke wurde als Blutreinigungs- und Haargroßmittel verwendet. Er enthält viele Zucker. Durch das Hinzufügen von Honig kann man Birkenwein daraus machen. Manchmal wird Tee aus den Blättern gemacht. Dieser wirkt harntreibend und soll auch gegen Fußschweiß helfen.
