Die Landschaft der Hoge Kempen, und damit auch der Platte Lindenberg und Vossenberg, hat sich in den letzten hundert Jahren stark verändert. Jahrhunderte lang war sie mit Heide bewachsen. Die Landschaft wurde durch die Lebensweise und die Landwirtschaft geprägt. Die Schafe weideten tagsüber auf der Heide. Abends gingen sie zurück zum Bauernhof im Tal. Den Mist verwendete man dort, vermischt mit einer Strohschicht aus alter Heide, auf den kleinen Feldern. Das Schneiden der Heide brachte mehr Heideblüten hervor. Und davon profitierten wiederum die Honigbienen. So war jeder kleine Bauer sowohl Imker, Ackerbauer als auch Viehzüchter, aber alles in sehr kleinem Maßstab.
