El paisaje de los Hoge Kempen, y por lo tanto también del Platte Lindenberg y Vossenberg, ha cambiado mucho en los últimos cien años. Durante siglos, estuvo cubierto de brezo. El paisaje fue moldeado por la forma de vida y la agricultura. Las ovejas pastaban durante el día en el brezal. Por la noche regresaban a la granja en el valle. Allí se utilizaba el estiércol, mezclado con una capa de mantillo de brezo viejo, en los campos. La poda del brezo producía más flores de brezo. Y de eso se beneficiaban las abejas productoras de miel. Así, cada pequeño agricultor era tanto apicultor, agricultor como ganadero, pero todos de manera muy a pequeña escala.
