Von 's-Hertogenbosch und Breda kam man in früheren Zeiten über das Rote Tor nach Antwerpen zur Pferdemarkt. Direkt links kam man in die Rodestraat in Richtung Sint-Jacobs-Kirche.
Das Rote Tor war ein Bastion in der umfangreichen spanischen Stadtmauer von Antwerpen, die 1866 abgerissen wurde.
Im Rahmen des Baus einer neuen U-Bahn-Linie wurden in den letzten Jahren archäologische Ausgrabungen der spanischen Stadtmauer durchgeführt, unter anderem beim Roten Tor. Die Gemeinde Antwerpen hat darüber einen Prospekt veröffentlicht. (Siehe Link: mehr Infos.)
