Depuis 's-Hertogenbosch et Breda, on pénétrait autrefois dans Anvers par la Porte Rouge, en arrivant sur la Place des Chevaux. En tournant directement à gauche, on arrivait dans la Rue Rouge en direction de l'église Saint-Jacques.
La Porte Rouge était un bastion dans l'immense enceinte espagnole d'Anvers, qui a été démolie en 1866.
Dans le cadre de la construction d'une nouvelle ligne de métro, des fouilles archéologiques de l'enceinte espagnole ont été réalisées ces dernières années, notamment près de la Porte Rouge. La commune d'Anvers a publié un dépliant à ce sujet. (Voir le lien : plus d'infos.)
