Die römische Heerstraße war vor 2000 Jahren Teil eines umfangreichen Netzwerks römischer Straßen. Die Straße führte von Velzeke über Oombergen, Sint-Lievens-Houtem, Borsbeke, Burst und weiter nach Asse und so nach Tongeren. Bis ins 18. Jahrhundert war dies die Hauptstraße Aalst-Oudenaarde. Der Legende nach zog Wellington mit seiner Armee über die Heerstraße nach Waterloo, um Napoleon zu besiegen.
