De Romeinse heirbaan maakte 2000 jaar geleden deel uit van een uitgebreid netwerk van Romeinse wegen. De weg liep van Velzeke, via Oombergen, Sint-Lievens-Houtem, Borsbeke, Burst en verder naar Asse en zo naar Tongeren.
Tot in de 18e eeuw was dit de hoofdweg Aalst-Oudenaarde. Volgens de overlevering is Wellington met zijn leger over de heirweg naar Waterloo getrokken om er Napoleon te verslaan.
