Brüssel hat viele Gartenviertel. Die meisten entstanden in der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts und sollten der arbeitenden Bevölkerung kleine, aber solide Wohnungen bieten. Die Landschaft wurde neu gestaltet, Gärten entstanden, es kamen Bäume an den Straßenrand, die Kinder erhielten den notwendigen Spielraum und die Schule war in der Nähe. Nach einem langen Arbeitstag in der manchmal sehr verschmutzten Fabrikluft konnte man hier buchstäblich durchatmen.
