Der Staatswald von Grünhaut befindet sich nordwestlich des Dorfes Bilstain, auf dem Plateau von Welkenraedt. Mit einer Fläche von etwa einhundert Hektar ist er eines der wichtigsten Waldgebiete im Land von Herve. Der Wald ist durch die Autobahn- und Eisenbahnverbindungen, die Lüttich mit Aix-la-Chapelle in Deutschland verbinden, in zwei Teile getrennt. Hier gibt es verschiedene Laubbaumgruppen, durchsetzt mit Nadelbaumplantagen. Einige Gewässer sind ebenfalls vorhanden, sowie sehr lokal Fragmente von Heideflächen mit Besenheide. Der Standort weist vielfältige Interessen sowohl aus landschaftlicher Sicht als auch hinsichtlich der Biodiversität auf. Besonders beherbergt er 9 Arten von Amphibien und Reptilien. Ein kürzlich angelegtes Regenrückhaltebecken am westlichen Rand hat sich ebenfalls als sehr interessant für die Odonatofauna herausgestellt.
