El bosque estatal de Grünhaut está situado al norte del pueblo de Bilstain, en la meseta de Welkenraedt. Cubre una superficie de aproximadamente cien hectáreas y representa una de las principales áreas boscosas del Pays de Herve. El bosque está dividido en dos partes por las rutas rápidas y las conexiones ferroviarias que comunican Lieja con Aquisgrán en Alemania. Se pueden observar diferentes comunidades de bosques de frondosas, intercaladas con plantaciones de coníferas. También hay algunas masas de agua presentes, así como, muy localmente, fragmentos de brezo con brezo común. El sitio ofrece muchos intereses, tanto paisajísticos como desde el punto de vista de la biodiversidad. Alberga especialmente 9 especies de anfibios y reptiles. Un estanque de aguas pluviales recientemente construido en el límite occidental también ha demostrado ser muy interesante para la fauna de libélulas.
