Im Jahr 1972 baute die VMW in den IJzerbroeken, in der Nähe des Naturschutzgebiets De Blankaart, ein großes Betonspeicherbecken: Es hat eine achteckige Form und ist 120 Fußballfelder (60 ha) groß. Es kann 3 Millionen m³ Wasser speichern: mehr als genug, um ein Drittel der Küstenprovinz jeden Tag mit Trinkwasser zu versorgen. Dieses Wasser wird aus der IJzer und den umliegenden Wasserläufen gepumpt und im Wasserproduktionszentrum neben dem Zentrum zu leckerem und gesundem Trinkwasser aufbereitet. Leistungsstarke Pumpen leiten es dann über die Wasserleitungen bis zu den Wasserhähnen nach Hause.
