Der Kern Pontaury entstand nördlich von Mettet und wurde bereits im 16. Jahrhundert erwähnt. Es entstand als Weiler am Rand eines Waldmassivs nördlich von Mettet, ebenso wie Devant-les-Bois und Bossière. Dieses Waldmassiv ist seit der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts aufgrund von Abholzung stark geschrumpft, aber seit Ende der 1920er Jahre hat der Waldbestand wieder leicht zugenommen. Der Name Pontaury bezieht sich auf pont au ri.
