El núcleo de Pontaury se originó al norte de Mettet y ya se mencionó en el siglo XVI. Surgió como un hameau en el borde de un macizo forestal al norte de Mettet, al igual que Devant-les-Bois y Bossière. Este macizo forestal ha disminuido significativamente desde mediados del siglo XIX debido a la tala, pero desde finales de la década de 1920, la masa forestal ha aumentado ligeramente. El nombre Pontaury se refiere a "pont au ri".
