Die Abtei von Maredret wurde 1893 auf Anregung von Agnès de Hemptinne erbaut. Sie finanzierte den Bau der Anlage aus eigenen Mitteln auf einem von der Familie Desclée gespendeten Grundstück. Agnes de Hemptinne war die jüngere Schwester von Hildebrand von Hemptinne, der die neogotische Abtei von Maredsous (die nur einen Steinwurf von Maredret entfernt liegt) mit Hilfe der Familie Desclée gründete. Agnes de Hemptinne erwarb eine solide religiöse und klösterliche Ausbildung im Kloster von Solesmes, die es ihr ermöglichte, Maredret mit sieben Schwestern zu gründen und dort die erste Äbtissin zu werden. Sie nahm aktiv am Bau der Abteikirche (einem prächtigen neogotischen Bau, der für seine Akustik bekannt ist) und an deren Verzierung teil.
