La Abadía de Maredret fue construida en 1893 por iniciativa de Agnès de Hemptinne. Ella financiará la construcción de la propiedad con fondos propios en un terreno donado por la familia Desclée. Agnes de Hemptinne era la hermana menor de Hildebrand de Hemptinne, quien fundó la abadía neogótica de Maredsous (que está a tiro de piedra de Maredret), nuevamente con la ayuda de la familia Desclée. Agnes de Hemptinne adquirió una sólida formación religiosa y monástica en el monasterio de Solesmes, lo que le permitió fundar Maredret con siete hermanas y convertirse en la primera abadesa. Participó activamente en la construcción de la iglesia abadía (una magnífica estructura neogótica, famosa por su acústica) y su decoración.
