Als das Weströmische Reich zusammenbricht und die Heerstraßen verfallen, fangen unsere Vorfahren an, Wasserläufe als Transportwege zu nutzen, und so entsteht das Dorf Brüssel an der Zenne rund um die Sint-Gorikseiland. Dieser Fluss war über die Jahrhunderte hinweg entscheidend für die Entwicklung der Stadt. Die Zenne, die hier noch oberirdisch fließt, wurde aus hygienischen und wirtschaftlichen Gründen ab 1867 überdacht, als sie Brüssel erreicht.
