Quando l'Impero romano d'Occidente collassa e le strade si deteriorano, i nostri antenati iniziano a utilizzare i corsi d'acqua come vie di trasporto e così nasce il villaggio di Bruxelles sulla Zenne intorno all'isola di Sint-Gorik. Questo ruscello è stato, nel corso dei secoli, fondamentale per lo sviluppo della città. La Zenne, che qui scorre ancora in superficie, è stata coperta quando entra a Bruxelles per motivi igienici ed economici a partire dal 1867.
