Der Capybara-Wanderweg verläuft vom Bootshaus in Beernem (beim Vergnügungshafen) bis zur alten Kaserne (heute Trödelladen und Containerpark). Mehrere Hinweise beziehen sich auf 2003. Wie/warum dieser Wanderweg entstanden ist, ist nicht klar, aber er Sicher ist, dass 2003 drei Wasserschweine entkommen waren und entlang des Kanals zwischen Aalter und Beernem gefunden wurden. Wasserschweine sind riesige Meerschweinchen, pflanzenfressende Sumpftiere, die in Venezuela vorkommen. Es ist verboten, die Tierart zu importieren, aber Eric Deschuyter hatte diese Tiere viel länger, sogar vor der Gesetzgebung dazu.
