Der Freiheitsbaum in Haasdonk wurde 1830 als Lindenbaum gepflanzt und erinnert die lokale Bevölkerung an die Belgische Revolution und die Abtrennung vom Königreich der Niederlande. An derselben Stelle, vor dem Rathaus, war zuvor auch ein französischer Freiheitsbaum angepflanzt. Dieser Freiheitsbaum oder -mast stand symbolisch für die Freiheit und die Demokratie des Volkes, ein Zeichen einer erneuerten und moderneren Gesellschaft, die durch die Ideen der Französischen Revolution geprägt wurde. 1969 wurde der belgische Freiheitsbaum erneut durch das jetzige Exemplar ersetzt.
