In einer Bogenschussweite von Emile Claus' Wohnhaus, an der Grenze zwischen Astene und Deurle, liegt das Feld, auf dem sich die Szene von „Zuckerrübenernte“ abspielte. Claus beobachtete dort die harte Arbeit der Ernte von Futterrüben in einem kalten Novembermonat. Es wurde die Inspiration für sein Meisterwerk, das immer mit seinem Namen verbunden sein wird und nach wie vor Bewunderung erregt.
