“Herselt hat fünf große Waldgebiete. Hertberg ist das bekannteste und zugänglichste. Es ist das größte Gründomänen unserer Provinz”, weiß Evi. Elsschot unternahm oft lange Wandertouren durch die Wälder von Herselt. Die Ruhe und das Grün standen in starkem Kontrast zum pulsierenden Antwerpen, wo sich Elsschot als Jugendlicher zum Dichter, Flaminger und Bohemien entwickelte.
Hier kam er in eine ganz andere Welt. Blauberg war in Elsschots Jugend ein Dorf ohne Elektrizität, wo Herr Pfarrer das Sagen hatte. Dank intensiver Studienrückzüge in Blauberg, weit weg vom antwerpener Festgetümmel, erwarb Elsschot 1904 ein Diplom in Handelswissenschaften. Er arbeitete in der Werbe- und Anzeigenbranche, wanderte durch Paris und Rotterdam und gründete nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg in Antwerpen ein eigenes Werbebüro.
