“Herselt cuenta con cinco grandes áreas boscosas. Hertberg es la más conocida y accesible. Es el mayor dominio verde de nuestra provincia”, sabe Evi. Elsschot solía hacer largos paseos por los bosques de Herselt. La tranquilidad y el verde contrastaban enormemente con la bulliciosa Amberes, donde Elsschot se transformó en poeta, flamenco y bohemio durante su adolescencia.
Aquí se encontró en un mundo completamente diferente. Blauberg era en la juventud de Elsschot un pueblo sin electricidad, donde el señor párroco tenía la última palabra. Gracias a intensas retiros de estudio en Blauberg, lejos del bullicio festivo de Amberes, Elsschot obtuvo en 1904 un diploma en ciencias comerciales. Trabajó en el mundo de la publicidad y el marketing, vagó por París y Rotterdam y fundó en Amberes su propia agencia de publicidad tras la Primera Guerra Mundial.
