In dem Archiv werden Dokumente der kantonalen Behörden, der Verwaltungsstellen und von Dritten gesammelt. Eine weitere Aufgabe des Archivs ist die Mithilfe bei der Wahrung der Rechtsgüter. Damit trägt das Archiv zur Rechtssicherheit bei und ermöglicht die langfristige Nachvollziehbarkeit staatlichen Handelns. Weiterhin werden in dem Archiv Kulturgüter aus der Geschichte des Kantons Zug archiviert und wird somit die Geschichtsforschung gefördert.
Das Staatsarchiv steht allen Interessierten zur Benutzung offen, dies auf Grundlage des Archivgesetzes vom 29. Januar 2004 und des Öffentlichkeitsgesetzes vom 20. Februar 2014. Im Rahmen des Schweizer Archivtags wird das Archiv regelmässig der Öffentlichkeit präsentiert.
