Im Jahr 1936 bot das deutsche Reichsluftfahrtministerium (RLM) Felix Wankel Unterstützung an, um einen funktionierenden Motor mit rotierendem Kolben zu entwickeln. Das RLM hatte großes Interesse daran, da sie stark damit beschäftigt waren, eine Luftwaffe aufzubauen, die später im Zweiten Weltkrieg eingesetzt werden sollte. Dank dieser Unterstützung konnte Felix Wankel ein größeres Laboratorium, die Wankel Versuchswerkstatt in Lindau am Bodensee, aufbauen. Während des Zweiten Weltkriegs konnte Wankel dank der staatlichen Unterstützung mit seiner Forschungsarbeit fortfahren. 1945 wurde sein Laboratorium von den Alliierten demontiert. Erst 1951 nahm der Forscher seine Experimente wieder auf, diesmal in seinem eigenen Haus in Lindau, wo er die Technische Entwicklungsstelle (TES) gründete.
