En 1936, le ministère allemand de l'Aviation (RLM) a soutenu Felix Wankel pour fabriquer un moteur fonctionnel à piston rotatif. Le RLM s'y intéressait fortement car ils étaient très impliqués dans la construction d'une force aérienne qui serait plus tard utilisée dans la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Grâce à ce soutien, Felix Wankel a pu construire un plus grand laboratoire, la Wankel Versuchswerkstatt à Lindau, près du lac de Constance. Pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, Wankel a pu continuer ses travaux de recherche grâce au soutien du Reich. En 1945, son laboratoire a été démantelé par les Alliés. Ce n'est qu'en 1951 que le chercheur a repris ses expériences, cette fois dans sa propre maison à Lindau, où il a créé la Technische Entwicklungsstelle (TES).
