Das Kirchdorf Jävenitz liegt etwa in der Mitte der Altmark am nördlichen Rand der Colbitz-Letzlinger Heide auf einer Talsandinsel in der Niederung des Laugebachs, der in die Milde fließt. Die Moordämme und das Jävenitzer Hochmoor zeigen heute das durch die Eiszeit entstandene charakteristische Bild. Der zugehörige Wohnplatz Jäskau liegt 3,5 Kilometer nordöstlich des Dorfes.
Der Name Jävenitz ist slawisch und bedeutet so viel wie Weidental. Es ist ein Runddorf, die Häuser zeigten eine fächerförmige Anlage, die Höfe eine Trapezform.
