Bassum liegt im Südosten des Naturparks Wildeshauser Geest etwa 25 km südlich von Bremen und wird vom Klosterbach durchflossen. Der Bassumer Ortsteil Nordwohlde liegt am Hombach; Neubruchhausen, der östlichste Ortsteil, befindet sich am Oberlauf der Hache.
Der Bassumer Utkiek ist ein 87 Meter hoher, künstlich aufgeschütteter Berg im Ortsteil Wedehorn. Er befindet sich auf dem Gelände der AbfallWirtschaftsGesellschaft mbH – Entsorgungszentrum Bassum und ist die höchste Erhebung im Landkreis Diepholz.
