Neumünster ist eine kreisfreie Stadt und ein Oberzentrum in der Mitte Schleswig-Holsteins. Mit rund 80.000 Einwohnern ist die Fairtrade-Stadt nach Kiel, Lübeck und Flensburg die viertgrößte Stadt des nördlichsten deutschen Landes. Besonders bekannt ist Neumünster als „Pferdestadt“, für das McArthurGlen Designer Outlet und die Holstenhallen.
Urkundlich zum ersten Mal 1127 als Augustiner-Stift „Wippenthorp im Gau Faldera“ erwähnt, war Neumünster lange ein Zentrum der deutschen Tuch- und Lederindustrie und ist seit alters her ein wichtiger Verkehrsknotenpunkt. Ab 1870 im Besitz der Stadtrechte, gehört die große Mittelstadt an der Schwale seit Mai 2012 zur Metropolregion Hamburg.
