Malente besteht aus drei Orten und neun Dorfschaften . Die Gemeinde liegt mitten in der Holsteinischen Schweiz. Der zentrale Ortsteil ist Bad Malente-Gremsmühlen und liegt zwischen dem Dieksee und dem Kellersee.
Malente hat mit dem Bahnhof Bad Malente-Gremsmühlen an der Bahnstrecke Kiel–Lübeck im Halbstundentakt Verbindungen nach Kiel und Lübeck.
Außerdem liegt Malente an der Bahnstrecke Malente-Gremsmühlen–Lütjenburg. Dort ist der Bahnverkehr eingestellt. Ab Sommer 2020 ist die Einrichtung eines Draisinenverkehrs geplant.
