Bereits im 6. Jahrhundert ließ sich der Heilige Goar vor der Loreley nieder, an der Stelle, an der später die Stadt "St. Goar" entstand.
Im Zentrum der Stadt befindet sich die ihm geweihte Stiftskirche mit gotischen Fresken.
Eine weitere Attraktion ist die "Katholische Pfarrkirche" mit einer der wertvollsten Altarstatuen aus dem 15. Jahrhundert.
Die größte Touristenattraktion ist aber die Festung Rheinfels, die größte Burgruine am Rhein, die hoch über der Stadt thront.
St. Goar bietet Möglichkeiten für zahlreiche sportliche Aktivitäten, wie z.B.: "Drachenfliegen" – auch Tandemflüge – über das Loreleytal und Wanderungen entlang des Rheinburgenwanderweges.
Darüber hinaus ist der Sandstrand von St. Goar ein idealer Zwischenstopp bei einer Kanutour oder Radtour entlang der romantischen Burgen und Schlösser im Weltkulturerbe Mittelrheinisches Obertal.
