Allerede i det 6. århundrede bosatte den hellige Goar sig lige overfor Loreley (Lorelei), på stedet hvor byen „St. Goar“ senere opstod.
I centrum af byen står den til ham helligede stiftkirke med gotiske freskomalerier.
En anden seværdighed er „den katolske sognkirke“ med et af de mest værdifulde alterbilleder fra det 15. århundrede.
Men den største turistattraktion er uden tvivl Vestningen Rheinfels, den største borgruin ved Rhinen, som tårner højt over byen.
St. Goar tilbyder muligheder for talrige sportsaktiviteter, såsom eksempelvis: „Deltaflyvning“ – også tandemflyvninger - over dalen ved Loreley (Lorelei) og gåture langs Rhins borgvandresti.
Derudover er St. Goar med sin sandstrand en ideel mellemlanding under en kanotur eller cykeltur langs de romantiske borge og slotte i verdensarven Øvre dal i Mellem-Rhein.
