Reeds in de 6e eeuw vestigde de heilige Goar zich rechtover de Loreley (Lorelei), op de plek waar later de stad „St. Goar“ ontstond.
In het centrum van de stad staat de aan hem gewijde stiftkerk met gotische fresco's.
Een andere bezienswaardigheid is de „katholieke parochiekerk“ met een der waardevolste altaarbeelden uit de 15e eeuw.
Maar de grootste toeristische attractie is wel de Vesting Rheinfels, de grootste burchtruïne aan de Rijn, die hoog boven de stad uittorent.
St. Goar biedt mogelijkheden voor talrijke sportieve activiteiten, zoals bijvoorbeeld: „Deltavliegen“ – ook tandemvluchten - boven de vallei van de Loreley (Lorelei) en wandelingen langs het Rijnburchtenwandelpad.
Daarnaast is St. Goar door het zandstrand een ideale tussenstop tijdens een kanotocht of fietstocht langs de romantische burchten en kastelen in het werelderfgoed Bovenvallei van de Middenrijn.
