Der Karmelenberg ist ein durch vulkanische Tätigkeit entstandener bewaldeter Schlackenkegel. Er markiert das südöstliche Ende des Osteifeler Vulkanfeldes und erhebt sich bei einer Höhe von 372 m ü. NHN als weithin sichtbare Landmarke etwa 170 m über die Pellenz.
Im UNO-Jahr der Berge war der Karmelenberg Berg des Monats Juni in Deutschland. Wegen seiner Ähnlichkeit mit dem Berg Karmel in Israel, der Kapelle auf dem Gipfel und der 340 Jahre alten Baumallee war der Karmelenberg in die Kandidatur aufgenommen worden, obwohl er die in der Ausschreibung geforderte Höhe von 500 Metern nicht erreicht. Gast bei der Proklamation zum „Berg des Monats in Deutschland“ am 21. Juni 2002 war unter anderem der Journalist Hans Lebrecht aus Israel. Ein Gedenkstein erinnert an die Proklamation.
