Das Essener Münster ist die Bischofskirche des Bistums Essen, des sogenannten „Ruhrbistums“, am Burgplatz in der Innenstadt von Essen. Es trägt das Patrozinium der heiligen Cosmas und Damian und der Jungfrau Maria und wird auch Essener Dom genannt.
Der Vorgängerbau war ursprünglich die Stiftskirche des Essener Frauenstifts, das um 845 von Altfrid, dem Bischof von Hildesheim, gegründet worden war. Das Münster, das nach Kriegszerstörung im Zweiten Weltkrieg wiederaufgebaut wurde, ist eine nach 1275 errichtete gotische Hallenkirche aus hellem Sandstein. Das oktogonale Westwerk und die Krypta sind erhaltene Teile des ottonischen Vorgängerbaus. Dem Münster ist nördlich ein Kreuzgang angeschlossen. Zu seinen bedeutendsten Kunstschätzen zählt die Goldene Madonna, die älteste vollplastische Marienfigur nördlich der Alpen.
