Die Göltzsch hat zwei Quellarme, die längere Weiße Göltzsch und die Rote Göltzsch. Beide entspringen in vermoorten Mulden in rund 700 Meter über NN im Waldgebiet Grüner Wald nördlich von Hammerbrücke im Naturpark Erzgebirge/Vogtland.
Die westlichere Weiße Göltzsch kommt dabei aus dem sogenannten Göltzschgesprenge und nimmt beim Hammerbrücker Ortsteil Rissbrücke Wasser der Zwickauer Mulde auf. Dieses wird über einen Floßgraben und an dessen Ende über die künstlichen Wasserfälle Rissfälle herbeigeführt. Die Weiße Göltzsch tritt nun in das Landschaftsschutzgebiet Oberes Göltzschtal ein. Hier hat sich ein steilwandiges Tal herausgebildet. An dessen Ende bei der Stadt Falkenstein/Vogtl. wird der Fluss zur Talsperre Falkenstein aufgestaut. Die flussabwärts folgende Gemeinde Ellefeld wurde auf 2 km entlang des Gewässers errichtet.
