La Göltzsch ha due rami sorgentiferi, il lungo Weiße Göltzsch e il Rote Göltzsch. Entrambi hanno origine in avvallamenti torbosi a circa 700 metri sul livello del mare nella zona boschiva Grüner Wald a nord di Hammerbrücke nel parco naturale Erzgebirge/Vogtland.
Il Weiße Göltzsch, situato più a ovest, proviene dal cosiddetto Göltzschgesprenge e raccoglie acqua dalla Zwickauer Mulde nella frazione Rissbrücke di Hammerbrücke. Questa viene condotta attraverso un canale e, alla sua estremità, attraverso le cascate artificiali Rissfälle. Il Weiße Göltzsch entra ora nella zona di protezione paesaggistica Oberes Göltzschtal. Qui si è formata una valle con pareti ripide. Alla sua estremità, presso la città di Falkenstein/Vogtl., il fiume viene sbarrato nella diga Falkenstein. Il comune di Ellefeld, a valle, è stato costruito lungo 2 km lungo il corso d'acqua.
