Die Ruhrtalbahn ist eine teilweise historische Eisenbahnstrecke von Düsseldorf-Rath über Essen-Kupferdreh, Bochum-Dahlhausen, Hattingen, Hattingen-Welper, Hattingen-Blankenstein, Witten-Herbede, Hagen-Vorhalle und Schwerte nach Warburg. Sie wurde 1870 bis 1876 von der Bergisch-Märkischen Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft errichtet, einer der drei damaligen, großen privaten Eisenbahngesellschaften im Ruhrgebiet. Die Strecke gilt als Beispiel dafür, dass Flusstäler wegen ihrer in der Regel gleichmäßigen Steigung seinerzeit für die Anlage von Eisenbahnstrecken besonders gut geeignet waren.
