Der Kettwiger See, im südlichen Teil des Essener Stadtteils Kettwig gelegen, wurde vom Ruhrverband von 1940 bis 1950, nach dem Stausee Hengsen und vor dem Kemnader See, als zeitlich vorletzter der sechs Ruhrstauseen erbaut. Der Kettwiger See ist im Verlauf der Ruhr flussabwärts der letzte Stausee; er befindet sich etwa sechs Kilometer hinter dem größten, dem Baldeneysee.
