Die Bastei wurde zum Ort des Massentourismus. August von Goethe rühmte 1819 die Aussicht: "Hier, von wo aus man von den schroffsten Felsen bis an die Elbe hinabsieht, wo in geringer Entfernung die Felsen des Liliensteins, des Königsteins und des Pffafensteins landschaftlich nebeneinander stehen und das Auge einen weiten Anblick genießt, der mit Worten nicht zu beschreiben ist." [2] Bis heute hat die Bastei die höchste Besucherzahl aller Aussichtspunkte in der Sächsischen Schweiz.
