De Bastei is een plek van massatoerisme geworden. August von Goethe prees in 1819 het uitzicht: "Hier, vanwaar men van de scherpste rotsen naar de Elbe kijkt, waar op korte afstand de rotsen van de Lilienstein, de Königstein en de Pffafenstein landschappelijk naast elkaar staan en het oog geniet van een wijd uitzicht dat met woorden niet te beschrijven is." Tot op de dag van vandaag heeft de Bastei het hoogste aantal bezoekers van alle uitzichtpunten in de Saksische Zwitserland.
