Die Salzgewinnung am Staßfurter Sattel reicht nachweislich bis in das 8. Jahrhundert zurück. Der Untergrund des Stadtgebiets von Staßfurt wird durch eine geologische Antiklinalstruktur, den Staßfurt-Egelner-Rogensteinsattel, gebildet, an den die Salzlagerstätten gebunden sind. Die Region um Staßfurt am Südrand der Magdeburger Börde gilt als Wiege des weltweiten Kalibergbaus.
Kalisalze, früher auch als „Staßfurter Salze“ bekannt, werden größtenteils zu Düngemitteln verarbeitet und besitzen damit seit über eineinhalb Jahrhunderten eine große Bedeutung für die Landwirtschaft.
