SUSE Linux begann als eine kommerzielle Distribution eines deutschen Unternehmens mit demselben Namen. Dieses Unternehmen wurde 1992 gegründet. Im Jahr 2001 geriet SUSE Linux jedoch in eine Krise und wurde von Novell übernommen. 2011 wurde Novell dann von der Attachmate Group übernommen. Diese Firma wurde im Oktober 2014 von dem britischen Unternehmen Micro Focus International gekauft. Im Juli 2018 kündigte Micro Focus den Verkauf von SUSE an das deutsche Unternehmen Blitz 18-679 für 2,535 Milliarden Dollar an.
Derzeit ist SUSE weiterhin als eine freie Distribution bekannt, die den Namen OpenSUSE trägt, sowie als kostenpflichtige Version namens SUSE Linux.
