Pappenheim ist der Name eines alten fränkisch-schwäbischen Adelsgeschlechts des Hochadels, das seinen Stammsitz im gleichnamigen Ort Pappenheim bzw. auf der Burg Pappenheim an der Altmühl hatte. Das Geschlecht übte von etwa 1100 bis 1806 das Amt des Reichserbmarschalls in Stellvertretung des Kurfürsten von Sachsen als Erzmarschall des Heiligen Römischen Reiches aus.
Als Stammvater gilt der Ministeriale Heinrich Haupt , ein Gefolgsmann des Kaisers Heinrich V., der im Jahre 1111 erstmals urkundlich erscheint. Möglicherweise war er ein Sohn oder Bruder des beim Kreuzzug von 1101 erwähnten Konrad, Marschall König Heinrichs IV.
