Suhl ist eine kreisfreie Mittelstadt im fränkisch geprägten Süden des Freistaats Thüringen. Sie liegt am Südhang des Thüringer Waldes im Tal von Lauter und Hasel. Suhl wird von der Landesplanung als Mittelzentrum mit Teilfunktionen eines Oberzentrums festgeschrieben.
Aufgrund ihrer Geschichte als Standort von Rüstungsbetrieben erklärten am 14. Februar 1991 die gewählten Vertreter des Stadtrates Suhl zur Stadt des Friedens. Gleichwohl bezeichnet sich die Stadt wegen der langen Tradition der Jagdwaffenherstellung gemäß Stadtratsbeschluss aus dem Jahr 2005 als Waffenstadt Suhl.
